1. Slasher got a chance to talk with Loaded rider James Kelly and discuss his recent battle with a Cadillac CTS-V driven by  George “Motoman” Notaras down a mountain road.

James had been wanting to shoot a car vs. skater video for a long time, and when the opportunity presented itself, James jumped on it.

“I was just skating on Toona with a bunch of friends, and we got to the bottom and I saw Motoman sitting there with a nice car with a really cool camera mount on the side. I was like, ‘Hey, that’s a really cool camera. You want to film some skateboarding?’ So, we started talking and I figured out what he was all about with his web episode, and he figured out what I was all about with my skating. Eventually, after a couple days scouting the hill, we decided to film a chase sequence.”

And the final product is incredible. James tears through corners with the car just feet from him. But these amazing shots didn’t come about without planning.

“It definitely took a lot of choreographing and practice to skate next to the car. By the end we got pretty good riding together.”

While James isn’t anticipating a rematch, he sees this as an opportunity for longboarding to get some much needed exposure that could lead to future projects.

“I’m hoping that this is the first step, or at least a step in the right direction, for longboarding to be seen as more marketable, pretty, and more eye catching. I think finally having a skater filmed next to a car definitely has the potential to open a lot of eyes to downhill skateboarding.”

James may be on to something with that. He recently did a shoot with Ecko Unltd. and Journeys Shoes that will be featured in Journeys stores across the Nation. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more collaborations like this in the near future. And when it happens, be sure to tell James Kelly thanks for making it possible.
